Built Here: Garvan's Gastropub — Dining in a 1759 Farmhouse on Huguenot Street |
Article Sub Headline |
Few restaurants in the Hudson Valley can say they're serving dinner in a building older than the United States. But Garvan's Gastropub, at 215 Huguenot Street, does exactly that — operating inside a 1759 farmhouse with wide-board floors, deep window sills, and the original character intact.
Owner Garvan McCloskey has preserved the home's authentic feel while building a menu that balances Irish pub standards with New American cooking. You'll find shepherd's pie and braised short ribs alongside pan-seared scallops over risotto in a lemon beurre blanc. The emphasis is on fresh, locally sourced ingredients — a farm-to-table approach before the term became trendy.
The Screened Porch
From May through October, the screened porch overlooking the lawn and gardens is the place to be. It's the kind of setting that turns a good meal into a memorable evening — especially when paired with one of their craft cocktails or a local beer. The gardens add a pastoral charm that's hard to find anywhere else in town.
Live Irish Music
Garvan's keeps the tradition alive with live Irish music on the first, second, and third Thursday of each month in the pub. It's an authentic session in an authentic setting — the kind of night that reminds you why New Paltz has such a vibrant arts scene. The music, the food, and the historic atmosphere combine to create an experience that's uniquely Garvan's.
Hours: Tue–Sun 12pm–9pm (closed Mondays)
History, hospitality, and a great meal — Garvan's Gastropub delivers all three in a setting you won't find anywhere else.
