Built Here: Inquiring Minds Bookstore — New Paltz's Independent Bookshop Where Every Shelf Has a Story

Tucked into a brick building on 6 Church Street, Inquiring Minds Bookstore is the kind of shop that reminds you why independent bookstores matter. No stockholders, no CEOs — just a relaxed atmosphere, a diverse selection, and a genuine love of the written word.

Founded in 2003, Inquiring Minds serves as a textbook source for SUNY New Paltz students, a local history hub for Hudson Valley readers, and a treasure trove for anyone who believes the best bookstores are the ones with personality. The staff are knowledgeable and passionate — the kind of people who can point you to exactly the right book based on a vague description of what you're in the mood for.

What You'll Find Inside

The shelves hold a little bit of everything: fiction and non-fiction, local interest titles covering Hudson Valley and New Paltz history, hiking and climbing guides for the Gunks and Mohonk Preserve, a dedicated kids' reading section, and even vinyl records. There are also $1 bookshelves built right into the wall — perfect for browsers on a budget.

Wheelchair accessible and pet-friendly, with indoor and outdoor seating, it's the kind of place where you walk in for one book and leave with three and a coffee. The store also hosts author events, book signings, and community gatherings throughout the year.

More Than Books

Inquiring Minds also operates a second location in Saugerties at 65 Partition Street, but the New Paltz original remains the heart of the operation — a gathering spot for readers, students, and anyone who values a good bookshop. In an era of online giants, this store proves that the personal touch still matters.
