How Family of New Paltz Is Fighting Addiction and Healing the Hudson Valley |
Your Neighborhood Safety Net — Crisis Intervention, Food Pantry, and Community Support Since 1971 |
More Than a Food Pantry
Walk into 51 North Chestnut Street on any given weekday and you'll find one of the most essential safety nets in the Hudson Valley. Family of New Paltz — part of the larger Family of Woodstock network — has been serving the community for over five decades, providing everything from emergency food assistance to crisis intervention, housing support, and mental health referrals.
The organization operates a food pantry Monday through Friday, serving hundreds of families each month. But food is just the entry point. Staff members are trained to help visitors navigate the full range of social services — from SNAP applications to emergency shelter placements to addiction recovery resources.
A 24-Hour Lifeline
While the walk-in center operates during business hours, the crisis hotline is available 24 hours a day. Call (845) 338-2370 in an emergency and you'll reach a trained counselor who can help with everything from domestic violence situations to suicidal ideation to urgent housing needs.
Services include: Food pantry, crisis intervention, emergency shelter referrals, housing assistance, mental health referrals, addiction recovery resources, and 24-hour helpline access.
Why It Matters
New Paltz may look picturesque — college town, farm stands, the Gunks — but economic hardship is real here. Family of New Paltz fills the gap between what government programs cover and what people actually need. They're the first call when someone's fridge is empty, when a family faces eviction, or when a young person needs help they don't know where to find.
The organization runs on donations and volunteers. If you've benefited from the community, consider giving back — even a few hours of sorting cans at the pantry makes a difference.
