Basque-Inspired Cider on a 210-Acre Orchard Paradise |
When you think of cider, you probably picture sweet, mass-produced drinks from the grocery store. Brooklyn Cider House at Twin Star Orchards, located at 155 North Ohioville Road in New Paltz, will completely change your mind. This small-batch farm cidery produces Basque-inspired natural ciders from apples grown right on their 210-acre property — with over 100 acres planted with cider apple varieties — and the experience of enjoying them here is as special as the cider itself.
A Sidrería in the Hudson Valley
Brooklyn Cider House takes its inspiration from the sidrerías of Spain's Basque Country, where cider is poured from a height to aerate it and create the perfect texture. The result is a dry, complex, naturally fermented cider that tastes nothing like the sugary stuff you grew up with. These are serious ciders for people who appreciate craft beverages — think wine-level complexity in a glass.
The cidery was founded by Peter Yi and his sister Susan, who left their careers in 2014 after Peter was inspired by a visit to a traditional Basque cider house. They purchased and revitalized Twin Star Orchards in the spring of 2015, and by 2017 had planted nearly 8,000 baby trees of hard cider varieties and tart, disease-resistant heirloom varieties. Today, they source over 80% of their apples from their own orchard.
Wood-Fired Pizza and Farm-to-Table Dining
The food pavilion at Twin Star Orchards is a destination in its own right. Wood-fired pizzas and burgers made with local ingredients pair perfectly with the cider flights. On weekends, the pavilion buzzes with activity as families, couples, and groups of friends gather to enjoy the food, drinks, and stunning views of the orchard and Shawangunk ridgeline.
Seasonal Events and Farm Stand
Throughout the year, Brooklyn Cider House hosts seasonal events, farm-to-table dinners, and live music. The farm stand features fresh produce, locally sourced specialty products, New York State craft beer, wine, and spirits — making it a one-stop shop for Hudson Valley flavors. They also host an annual Fermentation Festival celebrating cider, wine, and fermented foods.
The tasting room and farmstand are open year-round on weekends, with expanded hours (Friday through Sunday plus Holiday Mondays) during the regular season from spring through fall. It's the perfect stop after a hike in the Gunks or a ride on the rail trail.
