The 5 Best Breakfast Spots in New Paltz (Ranked by Locals)

From weekend line-ups worth waiting for to a 6 AM diner that never disappoints — here's where New Paltz actually eats breakfast.

If you've ever wandered down Main Street on a Saturday morning, you've noticed the lines. New Paltz takes its breakfast seriously — and locals have strong opinions about where to go. After talking to regulars, checking reviews, and doing plenty of our own egg-sandwich research, here are the five breakfast spots that consistently rise to the top.

1. Main Street Bistro — The Weekend Ritual

59 Main Street | 845-255-7766 | Open 8 AM–3 PM (closed Tuesdays)
Website: mainstreetbistro.com

Ranked #2 of 64 restaurants in New Paltz on TripAdvisor with over 340 reviews, Main Street Bistro is the breakfast destination that out-of-towners line up for — and locals plan around. The Cranberry Cakes (flapjacks with cranberries and almonds) have a cult following. The $1.95 breakfast special — two eggs any style, home fries, and toast — is one of the best deals in the Hudson Valley.

What to order: Cranberry Cakes, Kiki's Breakfast Stir Fry (scrambled eggs with broccoli, asparagus, tomatoes, and mushrooms over home fries), or the classic breakfast special.

Parking tip: Street parking on Main Street or the municipal lots behind the shops. Arrive before 9 AM on weekends or expect a 20–30 minute wait.

2. Plaza Diner — The 6 AM Institution

271 Main Street (TOPS Plaza) | 845-255-1030 | Open 6 AM–10 PM daily
Website: plazadinernewpaltz.com

When you need breakfast before a sunrise hike and nothing else is open, Plaza Diner is there. This classic American diner has been a New Paltz staple for years, serving the full menu seven days a week. Locals rave about the omelets and the milkshakes.

What to order: The Western omelet with a side of their hand-dipped milkshake. The bakery counter also has fresh pastries if you're in a rush.

Parking tip: Huge parking lot shared with TOPS supermarket. Zero stress, even on weekend mornings.

3. Mudd Puddle Coffee Roasters & Cafe — The Water Street Market Gem

10 Main Street (Water Street Market) | 845-255-3436 | Open daily (closed Tuesdays for food)
Website: muddpuddlecoffee.com

Mudd Puddle takes breakfast seriously — they source free-range eggs from Feather Ridge Farm in Elizaville and build sandwiches around them. The café sits inside the European-style Water Street Market, so you can grab your coffee and stroll the indie shops after.

What to order: James' Breakfast Sandwich — two eggs, bourbon bacon, and smoked gouda topped with balsamic caramelized red onions. It's the kind of sandwich that changes your morning.

Parking tip: Water Street Market has its own lot. Easy in, easy out.

4. B-Side Grill — The Fun Alternative

62 Main Street | 845-256-0100 | Open daily
Website: bsidegrill.com

Right across from Main Street Bistro, B-Side Grill is the spot locals go when the line next door is too long — and then they realize they love it just as much. The walls and ceiling are covered in hundreds of vinyl records, from The Beatles to Metallica. The food is solid, the vibe is fun, and the menu covers breakfast through burgers.

What to order: The classic breakfast plate (eggs, bacon, home fries, toast) or go big with a breakfast burrito.

Parking tip: Same as Main Street Bistro — street parking or rear lots. Pro tip: if Bistro's line is out the door, just cross the street.

5. Village Grind — The Quick Fuel-Up

139 Main Street | Open 7 AM–2 PM daily
Website: villagegrindnewpaltz.com

For those who want great coffee and a fresh pastry without the sit-down commitment, Village Grind delivers. They bake croissants and scones daily, and their lattes are among the best in town. Located just on the outskirts of downtown, it's the perfect first stop when you arrive in New Paltz.

What to order: A latte and a chocolate croissant, or grab a ham-and-cheese on a toasted croissant for the trail.

Parking tip: Easiest parking on this list — you're just outside the downtown core, so spots are almost always available.

The Bottom Line

New Paltz punches well above its weight for breakfast. Whether you want a sit-down meal with creative options (Main Street Bistro), a classic diner at dawn (Plaza Diner), a gourmet sandwich in a charming market (Mudd Puddle), a fun vibe with vinyl-covered walls (B-Side Grill), or a quick coffee-and-croissant before the trail (Village Grind) — you're covered.

One local tip: on summer weekends, every one of these spots gets busy between 9 and 11 AM. Go early, go late, or go on a weekday if you can. Your Saturday — and your stomach — will thank you.

Surprised Mudd Puddle doesn't get more love around here. That James' Breakfast Sandwich with the bourbon bacon and smoked gouda is no joke. People sleep on it because they're all lined up across town. Their loss honestly.

The $1.95 breakfast special at Main Street Bistro is absolutely real and it is absolutely worth the wait. Two eggs, home fries, toast. I brought my sister up from the city last fall and she could not believe the price. That alone should be on a billboard.
