At 271 Main Street, Suite 23, Vitality Yoga Flow is more than a yoga studio — it's a community hub for anyone seeking to improve their mental and physical well-being through mindful movement. Whether you're a seasoned yogi or just starting out, the studio offers classes that meet you where you are.

Vitality specializes in Vinyasa yoga — the flowing, breath-synchronized style that builds strength, flexibility, and focus. But they also offer slower, more therapeutic options like Yoga Basics, Slow Flow (heated and unheated), and Alignment Flow, which focuses on proper alignment for those recovering from injury or dealing with chronic pain. The variety ensures that every body type and experience level finds a comfortable fit.

At the Ulster County Fair in New Paltz, young members of the 4-H program showed cattle, won ribbons for artwork, and auctioned off animals they had raised themselves — a bittersweet but formative experience at the heart of the program's mission.

From a five-year-old guiding a Black Angus around the show ring to a teenager earning top marks in dog obedience, 4-H offers kids hands-on lessons in responsibility, skill-building, and the realities of farm life. Cornell Cooperative Extension's Melanie Fortrom put it simply: "We're the most AI-proof organization."

Winning projects move on to the New York State Fair in Syracuse, and prospective members can explore the program at the 4-H Fall Fest on October 10 at the Ulster County Fairgrounds — milkshakes included.

Interesting Facts

New Paltz, New York is far more than a college town tucked below the Catskills — its history and geography hold some genuinely unexpected surprises.

  • America's oldest surviving street: Huguenot Street in New Paltz, settled in 1678, is often recognized as one of the oldest streets in the United States with its original stone houses still standing — several of those houses have never left the ownership of the founding families' descendants.

  • A refugee founding: New Paltz was established by French Huguenots who first fled to the Palatinate region of Germany to escape religious persecution, then emigrated again to the New World — meaning the town's founders were already once-displaced refugees before they ever set foot in New York.

  • An early same-sex marriage controversy: In 2004, Mayor Jason West of New Paltz began officiating same-sex marriages before it was legal in New York State, making national headlines and resulting in criminal charges against him — charges that were ultimately dropped, years before marriage equality became law.

  • Geological celebrity: The Shawangunk Ridge running alongside New Paltz contains some of the purest quartzite conglomerate rock in the eastern United States, making it extraordinarily resistant to erosion and prized by rock climbers worldwide as among the finest friction-climbing terrain on the continent.

  • A name with disputed roots: The name "Paltz" is widely believed to derive from the German "Pfalz" (Palatinate), honoring the refugees' German refuge — but local historians note the Lenape people had their own names for the land long before, and early colonial records show considerable confusion about what the settlement should even be called.

Not every valuable community program comes with a price tag. Thriving Together New Paltz runs entirely free programming focused on mental health, substance use prevention, and community connection. The initiative is coordinated by the Town of New Paltz's Office for Community Wellness, a department that originated in January 2017 after a federal Drug-Free Communities grant ended and the town decided the work was too important to stop.

When you think of cider, you probably picture sweet, mass-produced drinks from the grocery store. Brooklyn Cider House at Twin Star Orchards, located at 155 North Ohioville Road in New Paltz, will completely change your mind. This small-batch farm cidery produces Basque-inspired natural ciders from apples grown right on their 210-acre property — with over 100 acres planted with cider apple varieties — and the experience of enjoying them here is as special as the cider itself.

Walk through the SUNY New Paltz campus during midterms or finals week and you'll see students camped in every available corner — the library overflow rooms, the student union couches, even the hallway benches near electrical outlets. Off campus, the picture is the same: renters in small apartments with no home office, commuters between classes with nowhere to settle, and a growing population of remote workers and freelancers who've moved to the area for the lifestyle but lack a professional workspace.

New Paltz doesn't have a dedicated co-working space. And with the town's unique demographics, it should.
