Trivia Question❓

Despite its French Huguenot founders, New Paltz, New York, takes its name from which region of Germany?

Answer at the bottom of the newsletter

The Mohonk Preserve is the crown jewel of outdoor recreation in the Hudson Valley. This 8,000-acre nonprofit nature preserve protects the northern Shawangunk Ridge—a dramatic white quartz conglomerate cliff formation that stretches across four counties and is recognized as one of "Earth's last great places" by The Nature Conservancy.

Whether you're a casual hiker seeking scenic views, an experienced trail runner looking for a challenge, or a rock climber dreaming of world-class routes, the Gunks have something for you. Here's your complete guide to hiking at Mohonk Preserve.

Interesting Facts

  • A German name, French roots: New Paltz takes its name from Germany’s Palatinate, where some of its French Protestant founders found refuge before coming to America.
  • A northbound river: The Wallkill River flows north past New Paltz, eventually joining Rondout Creek on its way to the Hudson.

  • Older than SUNY: SUNY New Paltz traces its origins to a school founded in 1828—more than a century before the State University of New York was established.

  • Real colonial homes: The stone houses on Historic Huguenot Street are surviving 18th-century buildings, not replicas made for a historic district.

Every town has a founding story, but few can walk you through theirs in the snow. At the end of a quiet tree-lined lane just off the center of New Paltz, a row of original stone houses has stood since the early 1700s, and winter is one of the most atmospheric times to see them. This is Historic Huguenot Street — a National Historic Landmark district and the reason New Paltz exists at all.

Secret Little Hack

The no-ticket ridge view

In New Paltz, the River-to-Ridge Trail is the shortcut for a Shawangunk panorama without a mountain climb. Start at the Springtown Road trailhead: its open fields deliver broad views of the ridge early in the walk, so even a short out-and-back feels like a scenic outing. Stick to the River-to-Ridge Trail; access to the adjacent Mohonk Preserve is separate.

New Paltz has released redacted summaries of two reports on racial tensions involving its police department. One cleared town council members Esi Lewis and Edgar Rodriguez of a complaint that they discriminated against police chief Matthew Sutton, while raising questions about how that complaint was handled.

The other report found insufficient evidence that Sutton disciplined two officers because of their race, but it did not dismiss broader concerns. All five officers of color interviewed described worries about bias, acceptance or belonging. Investigator Kate Nearpass also found that Sutton had not adequately addressed a reported derogatory remark, leaving the department with issues that need attention.
