Upstate New York is having a summer moment — and you don't need a plane ticket to get there.

A new travel guide spotlights eight Upstate towns worth a full week of your summer, each with a distinct character. Old Forge offers a water park turning 70 this year and a movie house charging $7 matinees. Saratoga Springs has thoroughbred racing dating to 1863 and mineral springs you can taste right in the park. Alexandria Bay is home to a hauntingly unfinished castle on its own island in the St. Lawrence River.

Rounding out the list: the art-colony roots of Woodstock, the 1700s stone houses of New Paltz, and Civil War iron history in Cold Spring. Peak season runs Fourth of July through Labor Day — pick one and go.

Ready for Rescue (R4R) is a 100% volunteer-run, New York City nonprofit dedicated to saving cats and dogs from kill shelters and the streets — and every dollar donated goes directly to animal care.

Each year, R4R rescues more than a hundred animals, with a special focus on sick, injured, and senior pets who are next on euthanasia lists, as well as pit bulls — a breed the organization proudly calls loving, loyal family companions.

Animals receive top medical care and are placed in foster homes while R4R searches for their forever families. If you're looking to help, R4R accepts donations and urgently needs both adopters and foster parents.
